“We are passionate about creating sustainable environments.”
– Martin Hallberg, sound designer & concept developer
Why are you choosing to be an H22 partner?
For us, it’s a given that we would be involved in the work being done to create sustainable cities and communities where people want to live and work. The fact that Helsingborg is showing great courage and daring to test new solutions makes it all the more exciting and promising!
What challenges does your organisation aim to solve within the context of the H22 initiative?
We are passionate about creating sustainable environments. Sound experience is a central aspect in the development of attractive cities that we can visit, live and work in. What we hear in a city is a clear indicator of what we prioritise. This means that we today listen to what we value highest – traffic and industry. Another challenge, regarding which there is much debate, is determining what cultural expressions are allowed to be heard in a city. Can a person, for example, move into an apartment above a theatre and then force the theatre to close because of noise? Together with Helsingborg and H22, we would like to shine a light on the all too often short-term work concerning sound environment in cities and ensure that harmonious sound takes as much room in the public sphere as noise.
When building the cities of tomorrow, what new forms of cooperation do you think we need?
We have hardly seen a glimpse of the many forms that are possible, or vital. We know that dialogue and action across boundaries, sectors, industries, and cities is essential for us to be able to reach the established sustainability goals. The actual physical engagement and involvement of all the city’s actors remains an important component.
How is your organisation using the potential of digitisation in the making of a smarter city?
AFRY, which Efterklang is a part of, is a global engineering, design and advisory company that has been building and developing cities since 1895. Digitisation is a natural part of everything we do, not least within urban development. This is one of the prerequisites for a smart city, which in turn is a tool for a sustainable city and good, healthy living.
