Some of Helsingborg’s oldest residents are trying some of the world’s newest foods. The idea is to see how 3D-printing technology might help us customise more appetising meals for people with chewing and swallowing disorders.
Malnutrition due to loss of appetite or chewing and swallowing difficulties is common among, for example, older adults, as well as for many other people. But imagine a blueberry purée printed to look and feel just like real blueberries. Or bright green broccoli stalks or chicken drumsticks. And imagine knowing that no matter your age, health, or difficulties chewing and swallowing, the food you are served is tailored to your specific nutritional needs.
To keep us healthy and happy as we grow older or when we become less able to chew and swallow, we need foods that are nutritious, look tasty, and maintain their consistency when heated.
In the Future Meals project, we’ve partnered our local retirement homes with food scientists and 3D technology innovators with the goal of placing small, user-friendly 3D printers in kitchens that supply care units with meal components.
