What does “home” mean to you? And what will it mean in the future city? As a central partner and co-creator in Helsingborg’s innovation journey H22, IKEA is getting to the heart of what home means in an ever-changing world. A concept that extends beyond four walls to include communities and neighbourhoods and a true sense of belonging.
IKEA is initiating exciting projects at three locations around Helsingborg in collaboration with the city, businesses and organisations, and above all, the people who call the city their home. It’s an opportunity to explore and test solutions that contribute to the development of communities and neighbourhoods, and build strong foundations for tomorrow’s homes. The goal is to make city living more affordable, healthy, and sustainable – for people, planet, and society.

The collaborative projects will evolve in the run-up to H22 City Expo in the summer of 2022, where they will be showcased for the world over 35 days and also live on in many respects. Four themes will guide the different activities and inspire new and unexpected partnerships:
It’s about seeing the big picture in creating happy homes, and about local solutions to global challenges. Take a closer look at what’s in store at the different geographical locations: The Neighbourhood, The Forest, and The Harbour.
The Neighbourhood: Drottninghög
Working in this area with local residents, city departments, and a range of other stakeholders, IKEA will be involved in developing activities and solutions to promote residents’ skills development and engagement in society, and also to strengthen community spirit and inclusion. The ambition is sustainability in all aspects of the model – environmental, economic, and social – and the start of something that can develop over many years.
The goal for 2021 is to establish “The Garden”, “The Market”, and “The Kitchen”. “The Garden” is an urban farm that will supply organic produce for food production in “The Kitchen”, with both prepared food and produce then being sold at “The Market”. This model will generate jobs, business ideas, and put Drottninghög on the map for visitors the world over.
The Forest: Fredriksdal
In the forest of Fredriksdal, the goal will be to reach and inspire a global audience. The project will explore what an alternative, fully sustainable community would look like and how it would function. Students from around the world are invited to share their visions for this, with detailed solutions for aspects such as shelter and housing, energy, and water. This community will be brought to life and built in the forest leading up to and during H22 City Expo. The ambition is to spark creativity and a global discussion on the steps ahead in developing affordable housing and sustainable communities.
The Harbour: Oceanhamnen
An abandoned warehouse in the Oceanhamnen harbour area will be used to showcase IKEA’s fascinating ideas for the homes of tomorrow. How will we use our home in the future? And how will new technology shape the form and function of our living space? Themes such as “The Future of Manufacturing”, “The Future of Retail”, and “The Future of Home” will inspire sustainable living in smarter cities. The harbour will also be a vibrant festival area with events and food outlets during Helsingborg’s international H22 City Expo.
Togetherness is essential, and for H22 we’ll need to find new forms of cooperation that are perhaps entirely new to us.
