HBG WORKS
What if an AI application could show you all the free parking spaces in the city?
How much time have you wasted driving in circles looking for parking? Feeling your stress levels rise as you pass the same spot again and again. And what about the damage being done to the environment in a time when most vehicles still run on fossil fuel? Well, Smarter City Lab is looking to artificial intelligence for a solution – an AI algorithm that predicts where parking spaces will be available at any time. How is this even possible, you ask? Well the answer is quite simple: data.
The City of Helsingborg is creating a data lab and data factory – Smarter City Lab – that will be a national resource for AI applications in a smart city. This is a cross-sectoral data factory open to other cities and the public sector, businesses, academia, and residents. Its goal is to provide infrastructure and architecture for handling different datasets along with tools and expertise within AI. Based on the idea of “the digital sharing economy”, the architecture will be defined by openness, scalability, and applicability. In other words, other cities and partners will have access and the journey from idea to everyday use will be much shorter. And judging by the fantastic results of the AI algorithm so far, it won’t be long before you know exactly where to park before you even get there.
The initiative receives funding from Sweden’s Innovation Agency Vinnova and the lab will initially be located at Hbg Works, Sweden’s first municipal innovation hub. Why not read more about Smarter City Lab and other AI initiatives in Helsingborg and get a glimpse of the city of tomorrow.
“It’s the best job I’ve ever had. I always keep in mind that everything we’re making needs to help people in the end. Big cities and municipalities need to think outside their borders and develop solutions for all of society. And it’s not just technology, it’s smarter work processes. Using the tech to free up time so that people can focus on what’s important – each other.”
– Magnus Lindhe, Product Manager IoT & Smarter City Lab, City of Helsingborg
