BoKlok / City of Helsingborg
The demographics in Sweden are changing. With a growing senior population, the need for housing that can meet their particular needs is increasingly paramount. Safe and secure, but also stimulating. Accessible and comfortable, but also sustainable. It’s quite a design challenge. SilviaBo is a sustainable, attractive, and adaptable housing concept, jointly developed by the foundation Silviahemmet, BoKlok, and IKEA. It involves apartments for people aged 55 and older, and who are prepared for this to be their home for life. Quite simply, it is smarter senior housing, designed for growing old in and with smart solutions that make everyday life easier. Mariastaden in Helsingborg will be home to the first full-scale project, and this concept will be showcased for all to see during H22 City Expo.
A concept with royal roots
Silviahemmet was founded by H.M. Queen Silvia in 1996 to improve knowledge and expertise on dementia. In 2015, a meeting between Ingvar Kamprad (founder of IKEA and BoKlok) and Queen Silvia gave rise to an idea: the concept of perfectly normal, nice, affordable housing for seniors, so well thought-out and adapted, that if someone should need some help with daily living in the future, they would not need to move out of their own home.
“Some 23 years ago, during the housing exhibition H99, we built what was then the one and only BoKlok model, the two-story apartment building Classic, in the exhibition area. That building was later moved and can now be found in the district of Mariastaden. That’s why it now feels extra fun to be able to bring the latest BoKlok model SilviaBo to Mariastaden and present the first full-scale area there, during H22 City Expo.”
– Jonas Spangenberg, CEO of BoKlok
Rising to the challenges of ageing
SilviaBo is a potential solution to enable people to live well in their own homes, including during later life. The concept creates opportunities to enjoy a home that’s so accessible and attractive, most people would never want to move away. And they won’t have to. Because these are homes that are specifically designed to help people live safely and comfortably, even if everyday life becomes a bit more difficult with time. In attractive surroundings and a park-like environment, it’s the perfect place to call home, for life.
The Mariastaden development by BoKlok will be a satellite location during H22 City Expo. Two of the newly built apartments will be open to visitors throughout Expo. These homes will be individually furnished to illustrate how they can be tailored to handle potential issues for seniors, including targeted design solutions for living well with dementia. Seminars, presentations, and guided tours are just some of the activities planned, with a warm welcome to all visitors.
