City of Helsingborg
As technology develops at an increasing rate and becomes integrated in almost all aspects of our lives, it’s vital that real needs and the human perspective shape the role of tech in society. And what’s more important in this journey than protecting and upholding the rights of our greatest resource – our children.
The child rights organisation UNICEF has produced a guidance document to ensure that child rights are safeguarded in the global development of artificial intelligence (AI), and Helsingborg is playing an essential role in this. In collaboration with AI Sweden, the City of Malmö, Lund Municipality, and Lund University, Helsingborg has been appointed as one of fifteen global test beds or “pilot partners” to evaluate the policy guidance by applying it to ongoing AI projects in the city. These fifteen partners include a mix of participants from Chile, the USA, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and the UK as well as global players such as H&M. The goal of this two-year initiative is for pilots to present case studies to explore approaches, lessons learned, and insights on how AI policies and systems can support children’s development.
As one of Europe’s most innovative cities, Helsingborg is a role model is developing smart solutions to improve quality of life for the people of the city. Around twenty-five child rights strategists work at all the different city departments with exploring how to strengthen the rights and the voice of children in tomorrow’s city. Why not read about LAIban, the preschool AI assistant, for an idea of the exciting innovations that are putting children in the driving seat.
Visit UNICEF’s website to find out more about the test beds and their focus areas and keep updated as the project develops. Or discover some of the other test beds around Helsingborg where inspiring innovations are born.
This project has been initiated by the UNICEF Office of Global Insight and Policy, supported by and partnering with the Government of Finland, and collaborating with the IEEE Standards Association, the Berkman Klein Centre for Internet & Society, the World Economic Forum, the 5Rights Foundation and other organisations that form part of Generation AI. The work will be presented at the Global Forum on AI for Children in Helsinki in November 2021.
“We are delighted and proud to be one of the cities chosen. Children’s rights are a priority area in basically all of the city’s guidance documents, and many people are working actively with including the children’s perspective in the work with building the smart and sustainable city.”
– Martin Güll, Chief Digital Director, City of Helsingborg
