In the amazing new district of Oceanhamnen being built by the water’s edge in central Helsingborg, a new facility is now a proud part of the city skyline – this is Reco Lab, a treatment plant, but also a whole lot more.
In the smarter city, the challenges facing society are not left to others to solve. They become the things that drive us to co-create and think in new and exciting ways. The curved glass face of Reco Lab is a symbol of changing times, where a sewage treatment plant is located deep in the heart of the city as a place for all of us in Helsingborg and beyond to explore, learn, and develop solutions for living a smart city life.
Reco Lab consists of three parts; a development unit, a test bed, and a showroom. All three contribute to developing a new system of collecting and handling wastewater and food waste, which is already being tested by the first residents of Oceanhamnen. This three-pipe separation system – one pipe for baths, dishwashing and washing machines, one pipe for ground food waste, and one vacuum pipe for toilets – leads directly to Reco Lab for treatment. Increased biogas to fuel city buses, more recycled nutrients for food production, purified bath water in our public pools? The possibilities are endless. These are being explored here together by academics, companies, and private individuals to see what techniques and services may shape the future within energy, water, and waste, with a showroom for exhibitions, workshops, and discussions on these topics.
