Domestic violence has always been a widespread problem. There is the trauma suffered by those being abused, but also the harmful effects on the children living in unsafe homes. With a sharp rise in domestic abuse during the pandemic’s isolating conditions, connecting with those being harmed is more critical than ever.
BrightAct is an innovative startup with a goal – to provide a global safety net for help-seekers and bridge the gaps between public sector and non-profit organisations in providing effective and much needed support to individuals.
BrightAct’s app to support domestic violence help-seekers was a challenge winner in the world’s largest tech competition EUvsVirus, with over 22,000 participants from more than 100 countries. This application is a shining example of how we can use thoughtful tech to address very human needs. The app is securely encrypted, has channels to report abuse, educational features on cycles of domestic violence, and CBT exercises. Its user-driven design makes sure that individuals at their most vulnerable will find their way to the right kind of support in an environment of trust.
With the backing of the EU Innovation Council, the BrightAct app will now be piloted in the City of Helsingborg over a two-year period. The city will be the initial test bed for scaling internationally, and BrightAct will co-develop features based on inhabitants’ needs with the city. Features that can be adapted to the city, depending on these needs, are for example: the chat with support organisations, shelters, and legal support, as well as contact channels to the police, healthcare, and social services.

“BrightAct will bridge the gap in-between organisations, to safely guide help-seekers to support. And to help the public sector to address this issue from a multi-angular perspective.”
Elinor Sameulsson & Sofie Wahlström, Founders of BrightAct
