The garbage isn\u2019t quite taking itself out yet, but NSR (Nordv\u00e4stra Sk\u00e5nes Renh\u00e5llnings AB) has tested an entirely new needs-based system: waste collection on demand. 2,000 Helsingborg households took part in the testing.<\/p>\n

A sensor slider was mounted onto the waste bins, and when they were ready to be emptied, the homeowner sent a pickup request by moving the slider. A signal was then automatically sent to NSR. Instead of following a pre-planned pickup route, it was customer needs that determined the routes for waste collection.<\/p>\n

Waste collection workers no longer needed to stop at each address and check if a bin needed to be emptied. They knew in advance where pickup was needed.<\/p>\n

The testing ended in May 2021 and was then evaluated. The hope was that the test would increase the sorting of household waste, but this could not be proven. The costs and number of transports also increased. However, the experience for the customer and the possibilities to order pickup based on need were viewed as positive.<\/p>\n

The test was unique and something that has never been tried before on this scale. The experiences from the testing have opened up for new ideas regarding how waste services can be developed in the future.<\/p>\n
