H22 City Expo is an international event in Helsingborg, Sweden in the summer of 2022 that will focus on long-term innovation work aimed at lasting change, for example, through circular solutions, sustainable urban development, smart technology, and much more.<\/p>\n

In 2020, the European Commission awarded Helsingborg as one of Europe\u2019s most innovative cities, and H22 is part of a focused effort to accelerate the innovation work. During H22 City Expo, you will be able to see, experience, and explore innovations that will shape the smart and sustainable cities of the future.<\/p>\n

Smart circular housing in practice
\n<\/strong>
\nIn the newly built city district of Oceanhamnen in central Helsingborg, more than 2,000 homes and offices are using a unique system for increased sustainability. Simply put, three different pipes run from each home or office and enable water and waste resources to be converted into renewable energy. The project is the first in the world to use the new system at full scale \u2013 following its development in Helsingborg \u2013 along with sister projects in six cities around Northern Europe.<\/p>\n

A climate-friendly carbon product that reduces emissions<\/strong><\/p>\n

Working out of Vera Park \u2013 a thriving test bed for jointly developing green solutions in Helsingborg \u2013 NSR (regional environmental company Nordv\u00e4stra Sk\u00e5nes Renh\u00e5llning AB) is exploring the role that biochar can play in addressing climate issues. Biochar is produced by burning organic material\u00a0in a container with very little oxygen, a process known as pyrolysis. The result is a stable form of carbon that won\u2019t easily leak into the atmosphere, and clean energy is created in the process in the form of heat. Biochar can also be used in soil to bind the carbon dioxide released when waste from gardening and agriculture is left to decompose naturally.<\/p>\n

Sustainable urban planning in real time<\/strong><\/p>\n

The furniture giant is a major partner of H22, and for the first time in the company\u2019s history, IKEA is collaborating with an entire city through several unique projects in Helsingborg. Among other things, a new little community is being built in the forest of Fredriksdal, specifically with H22 City Expo in mind, where students and researchers from around the world will be engaged in exploring how to create truly sustainable and circular housing and communities for the future.<\/p>\n

The decision to accelerate the city’s innovation development through H22 was made in 2019, but H22 City Expo in 2022 is also just a stop along the way. The journey began already in 2012 when the city adopted a common vision for what Helsingborg will be like by 2035. H22 is financed by a lump-sum dividend from the Port of Helsingborg.<\/p>\n
